O’KEEFFE COUNTRY

THE GEORGIA O’KEEFFE HOME AND STUDIO IN ABIQUIU

http://www.okeeffemuseum.org/visitor-info/abiquiu-home-studio.aspx

Tour dates generally range from mid March to mid November.  The cost is generally from $30 to $50. Please call Georgia O'Keeffe Foundation well in advance at (505) 685-4539

Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986) was an important American modernist who painted the stunning architectural and landscape configurations of northern New Mexico for more than 40 years, beginning in 1929.  She bought a house in the area at Ghost Ranch in 1940, and another in Abiquiu in 1945, both of which are now owned by the Museum.

The 5,000-square-foot Spanish Colonial-era Abiquiu compound was in ruins in 1945, and for the next four years, O’Keeffe supervised its restoration, which was carried out by her friend, Maria Chabot.  She moved from New York to make New Mexico her permanent home in 1949, and lived either at the Abiquiu or Ghost Ranch houses until 1984, when she moved to Santa Fe because of ill health.

Although the Ghost Ranch house is not open to the public, tours of the Abiquiu house are available on a limited basis and by appointment.

Visitor Guidelines: For your comfort, the tour guides recommend comfortable shoes year-round. During warmer months, sun hats and insect protection are encouraged. Please be aware that public restrooms are not available at the Georgia O’Keeffe Home and Studio, but are provided at the Abiquiu Inn. If you have special needs, please notify the office when making your reservation.

Directions: Guests meet at the Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio Tour Office next to the Abiquiu Inn and are taken by shuttle to the Abiquiu house.

From Santa Fe, take US 84/285 north to Española (approximately 25 miles). In Española, follow signs for US 84 toward Chama. Veer left and take US 84 north to Abiquiu (22 miles). The Abiquiu Inn will be on your right.

Please arrive 15 minutes before your tour is scheduled to begin. Check in at the Tour Office located next door to the Abiquiu Inn on US Highway 84, between mile markers 211 and 212. The shuttle will leave promptly at your reservation time, and return to the parking area one hour later.

If you are in need of transportation to Abiquiu from Santa Fe, please contact Private Ride (Michael Trujillo) at 505-995-8689.
